On Thursday, CARTA took its first step toward a greener future.

CARTA debuted its new fleet of zero-emission, battery-electric buses with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The six new zero-emission buses were purchased as a part of the Federal Transportation Authority's Low or No Emission grant program.

CARTA Chairman Mike Seekings said this is only the first step in the company's efforts to become more energy-efficient.

"We want to make sure we integrate everything into our system that makes our ridership happy, convenient and comfortable and all those things and are environmentally sensitive to the community, and this does all of that," Seekings explained.

In July of 2018, the CARTA Board of Directors passed the resolution to transition its entire fleet to zero-emission battery electrics over the next several years.

This first fleet is set to go into full service in the first quarter of 2020.
